Kitchen Island ideas! RePurpose & ReInvent

Haven't you ALWAYS dreamed of a kitchen island? Well, it is possible AND affordable with REPURPOSING! Take a piece you already have (or one you get from ONE VINTAGE LANE!) and go for it!

 

 

 

 This one is a repurposed dresser! It is wonderful with the wheels because you can easily move the piece out of the way of doors, entry ways etc.

 

 

 Here is another one done with a dresser. So great for added storage in the kitchen!

Or how about this one for a smaller space! I love it. Take the base of an old sewing machine ( you probably have one in your basement like I do! LOL) and add a precut piece of countertop, or again, an old door---Voila! Instant island.

 

 

 

 Or this one! For more of a French Country feel! (We have 2 of these in the shop by the way). Paint it pale to blend in room or bold to add a surprise pop of color!

Spring fever--Plant something! Use vintage containers!

Here at One Vintage Lane I am always on the look out for a great new idea and a way to use and display ALL of my favorite vintage finds! Spring fever has got me wanting to add new life to the house and store! Here are some FABULOUS and EASY planting ideas I gathered from around the web and my home!

                           How FUN is this! Succulents are so beautiful, hardy and affordable!

What a statement a collection of containers makes. Wouldn't these be cute lined up on an old wooden bench on the porch!

 

I LOVE vintage silver items. These just add a pop of class to a display. Make a stack of books and vary the height of these on an entry table or accent area! OR put them at each place setting at a party or shower as a take home item for your guests! They will never forget you :)

Dig out those old candy dishes. They make GREAT planters to! I like to put a little bit of gravel or rocks in the bottoms of the containers as well. That helps with drainage for the water and roots.

To Paint or Not to Paint---Apparently that IS the question!

Hello all. So I recently purchased this great antique (circa 1890-1920) mantle to put in my shop. I posted a quick picture on facebook and posed the question--should I paint it! Well, it has received overwhelming response!

Websters Chalk Paint

So excited to be using and SELLING Websters Chalk Paint Powder! It is a fabulous, all natural, product made here in the USA. You simply mix it with water and add to any latex paint. It is so smooth and rich and a little goes a LONG way!

I painted this 6 foot long dresser with just ONE CUP (8 oz) of paint which was just 2 TBSP of Websters Chalk Powder Mix! So stop in to One Vintage Lane and grab a bag---you will be hooked.

Picture Placement for walls

So you have a big empty wall and have NO idea what to put there? I help with this all the time :). There are really no exact "rules" to this but I have provided you with some tips and tricks to accomplish a look YOU love.

If possible, it is always great to break up a long wall with a small accent table, stack of suitcases, bench....you get the idea. This will help break up the space and make it less intimidating and easier to accessorize!

 

If you already have some items you want to display, measure them and then cut out paper shapes in their size and play around with the arrangement without commitment. Be sure to use painters tape because it is less tacky and won't harm your wall paint.  Then when you are happy pound the nails right through the paper to get exact placement and then simply tear the paper down.

Just have fun with it. Hang what you LOVE. Don't be afraid to mix shapes as seen here...ovals, squares, stars.....it all works!

 

 

It is also fun to mix it up with empty frames---so fun to fill in the middle with a monogram. It is a good tip to paint them all the same color as well for a more cohesive look.

Finishing up the Dining room tour

This is the short wall that has the doorway to the foyer. Again, with my love for serving trays, here a repurposed a bathroom towel holder and simply set the silver trays in. I change these out too anytime I find a new tray that I MUST have! I did a blog post earlier on this display here when I talked about style on a budget.

THIS is the top of the black cabinet from the first post....the cage holds my fabulous vintage alarm clocks. I love keeping collections together, it makes more of a statement for sure. I have wired a wooden letter "C" inside the top of the cage. I intended the C to represent my last name, until my daughter simply said "o, cool, C for clocks!" Serendipity :) I used old books inside the cage as well for height varience. I think it looks good like this but won't it be great if I could just FILL it, packed full, with clocks?! Gotta keep shopping.

The last wall to share with you is my favorite. It all started with this wonderul window I got....wow, over 10 years ago.....geez time flies! I recently found the framed vintage picture above it at a resale shop...perfect fit. I made the banner that states our last name. I also made the silhouette canvases, one says Mr. and the other Mrs. for each side.

Welcome Back!

 

Continuing on with the dining room tour today....the picture above is a close up of this.....

Here I have another wonderful piece that was found at a salvage shop for under $20.00! I painted it out in a glossy black and added new hardware. Its former life was, I'm sure, a dresser but I think it makes the PERFECT buffet for my dining room.

 

Above it I have my vintage serving trays. I just LOVE these and since there are so few occasions to actually use the trays....I hang them! That way I can enjoy them daily. I love the scrolled edges and the wonderful vintage colors in shades of blues and reds.

 

The small square wall hanging is a piece I saved from a broken door, I simply stamped the word PARIS on it, simple but chic! And, of course, you see I used a vintage suitcase for height on the buffet...you will soon discover that I LOVE vintage suitcases...I have them everywhere! I actually put them to work for me, the hold office supplies, art from my kids when they were little, nail polish...on and on!

 

 

I love my apothecary jars! I change their contents all the time, for the season...for my mood....you name it. They are a fun way to, again, add instant change to a room, add a pop of color, whimsy....you get the idea.
